I’m reading a very good biography at the moment

I’m reading a very good biography at the moment - ‘Buddy Holly’ written by Ellis Amburn in the mid- 90’s. The birth and the first few years of rock n' roll is deftly laid out, with Buddy and the Crickets in the lead. In the 1970’s, I had the good fortune to be acquainted with three of the Crickets: Jerry Allison (drums), Joe B. Maudlin (bass) and Sonny (I Fought the Law) Curtis (guitar) when all three lived for a while in Los Angeles. Sonny was not a part of the ‘discovered' Crickets when Buddy was alive, having taken a gig on the road with Slim Whitman just prior to “That’ll Be the Day’ landing them very much on the world stage. But, he lent his considerable guitar chops on several of Holly’s hit releases and after Buddy’s accident, toured with JI in the 2nd iteration of The Crickets. Allison (aka JI) is pictured here, circa 1972, in my first little studio, in Burbank. Auburn quotes both of them profusely and lays out how JI’s innovative drumming was integral to the sound that captivated the music world back in the late 50’s, not to mention influencing and sparking a tidal wave of musical artists soon to appear.
Sonny taught me a little guitar, made us laugh a lot; glad I knew them.

I’ve posted about this before: my mother’s best pal was Roberta Renish (& my Godmother) and her dad was a professional photographer, had a studio on Maple Street, downtown Los Angeles. Betty Ann was apparently his muse, as I have many prints. This one is probably the most bizarre, circa 1939.
