Last night’s full moon & something I usually try ( Last night’s full moon & something I usually try (& enjoy) is catching a landing jetliner, on its way into Long Beach Airport, crossing in front of the rising moon. Sounds fairly easy; isn’t. To use a golf analogy: it’s a hole-in-one, aka occurring rarely. Sometime in 1987, Time Magazine sent me to the Dis Sometime in 1987, Time Magazine sent me to the Disney Studios to photograph this successful trio: Linda Obst, Christopher Columbus & Debra Hill. I just learned this morning that Linda Obst passed away at 73 a few days ago. And Ms Hill had gone years before, at the tender age of 54. When we were assigned, they were in the midst of editing ‘Adventures in Babysitting’ he just two years away from the enormous success of ‘Home Alone.’ Ms Obst has a producer credit on some stellar films, ie ‘Interstellar,’ ‘Contact’ and wrote ‘Hello, He Lied.’ And a funny thing happened that day. We had our session on an unused stage & I left my pricey French tripod on an adjacent stage, but not 20 feet from where we all had a lively shoot, as they were lovely people, true for all three. When finished, my assisant Will informed me that the Gitzo had been…stolen. 69 years now since the acting legend that was Jame 69 years now since the acting legend that was James Dean was snuffed out on this day in 1955. The accident occurred on California Highway 41, near the tiny hamlet of Cholame. I was just 10, knew nothing of him. But, shortly after, I saw a double bill (remember them?) of ‘Rebel Without a Cause’ & ‘East of Eden,’ Eden being the one that spoke to me. Not long after, began smoking, trying to look tough, displaying conflicted teenage feelings. Ha! A Japanese fellow named Seita Ohnishi set-up a memorial to Dean, located near the Jack Ranch Cafe, very near the crash site.The 1st time I saw it, the wooden seating area around a tree contained little recessed medallion sculptures of him. I’m attaching my photograph of one, but there were several. Naturally, the next time I stopped, they had been relocated...by thievery. Something I rarely do: putting up a photo of mysel Something I rarely do: putting up a photo of myself, but this one is sentimental and taken in an era when photography was fun and definitely more profitable for many of us. The 80’s, this was, in the New York studio of Enrico Ferorelli and my agent back then, the lovely lass on the far right, is Ms Dot McMahon and she ran her business from his studio. And next to her and just behind me, is Mary Jane Kinney, whom I’m still friends with happily to this day (Dot, too) and the woman on the left is Dot’s sister Annie, helping to keep track of the many transparency’s produced by all of Dot’s shooters.
